Most people around the world are
suffering from high LDL and HDL (i.e. good or bad cholesterol) levels in
their bodies. The reason behind this is unhealthy diet, excess use of
oil, and some drugs that increase LDL/HDL level in the body. A lot of
people around the world are fighting with their cholesterol levels by
making their diet healthy, exercising, and with a lot medicines. But
what if we can do some easy changes in our lives that could do wonders?
Yes, there are some very easy and beneficial life hacks that reduces the
cholesterol in the body.
1. Onion Extract:
It is stated in a very famous study that
there are some extracts found in onion that can lower the cholesterol
level in the body. In another study, conducted by the nutrition experts,
stated that onion is not only beneficial for regulating cholesterol
level but it reduces the bad cholesterol level i.e. LDL and it also
regulates the blood sugar level. Nutritionists believes that regular use
of onion and garlic in your diet can do wonders but do not expect an
miracles because these natural drugs works slowly but they work for
longer period of time.
2. Laxatives:
Laxatives are known for making your
bowels move perfectly but they can also help you reduce or regulate your
cholesterol level in the body, but the key is to use them in right way
to achieve better results in real soon. Laxatives contains some soluble
fibres in them like Metamucil that blocks the way of cholesterol to get
absorbed into the blood. As the cholesterol makes its way over your
intestines and stomach, those jelly-like elements, found in laxatives,
picks-up cholesterol, and stop it’s absorption in the blood. Since these
substances in the laxatives grips the cholesterol found in your food,
and leaves the natural cholesterol found in your body, and it is only
beneficial if taken with big meals or meals with higher oil in it.
Though it does blocks the cholesterol absorption, its soluble fibres
also lowers the bad cholesterol while making you feel healthier and it
also supress appetite.
3. Red Yeast Rice:
Yeast rice is a type of yeast that grows
on fermented rice and contains a special compound called ‘Monacolin K’,
and the same compound is found in statin, which is called ‘lovastatin’.
‘Monacolin K’ blocks the liver from creating excess cholesterol in your
body that needs to protect your cells. And when your body doesn’t
create the natural cholesterol, your liver will turn on your liver
receptor that will pull out the bad cholesterol from your blood,
resulting the overall cholesterol of your body will reduce. It is shown
in the studies that one pill of red yeast rice can reduce bad
cholesterol or LDL by 10% to 30%.
4. Tofu:
I have been listening that soy products
or tofu can have good or bad effects on breast cancer tumours but in
recent study it is proved that eating tofu or products made from soy
actually doesn’t have any negative or positive effect on tumours of
breast cancer but on a good side tofu and soy products can reduce
cholesterol levels in the body. Doctors from HARVERD medical school says
that drinking 2 ½ cups of soymilk and eating 10 oz. of tofu a day can
reduce bad cholesterol level up to 5% to 6%. This is because Tofu
contains phytosterols which is a cholesterol very low in proteins, so if
you replace meat with tofu, you can reduce your cholesterol levels to
great extent and can enjoy good healthy life.
5. Alcohol:
If someone says that alcohol can help
you deal with cholesterol problems, would you believe that? Difficult to
believe but this is absolutely true. A Glass of red wine every day, can
help you increase the levels of good cholesterol (HDL) in the body
while it doesn’t have any effect on LDL, which means it doesn’t increase
or decrease the levels of LDL in the body. HDL is more like a Liquid
Draino that cleanses the arteries so in that case the more the HDL in
the body, the better it is. But it doesn’t mean that you are allowed to
have a bottle of red wine every day, because excess amount of alcohol
can have negative effects on the body.
People who are older than 65 are
recommended to take only one glass of red wine a day, while people
younger than 65 can take 2 glasses of wine a day. But if you don’t drink
than there are no certain reasons to start drinking from today. Alcohol
can weaken your heart and can affect your liver too but if you are a
drinker than it is better to take advice from your doctor and drink with
guidelines.
6. Pectin:
The white rind on oranges are bitter in
taste and contains a fibre called pectin that has power to reduce bad
cholesterol level (LDL) by 7% to 10%. Pectin works like Metamucil and
phytosterols, to muddle up cholesterol levels in your meals before it
gets absorbed in the body. Pectin is also found in apples, which is
definitely tastier and easy to take than bitter orange pulp. You can
take both foods in fresh but if not available than there are supplements
available in the market that contains apple or orange pectin.
7. Sleep:
A study was conducted in Japan- that
says if a women is not taking enough sleep (which is less than 5 hours)
or a women who is getting too much sleep (like more than 8 hours) is
more likely to have higher levels of good and bad cholesterol in the
body. This is because our body metabolism occurs at night and this is
the reason that a lot of medications prescribed for cholesterol should
be taken at night time. Getting too much sleep or sleeping too less can
disturb the processing of whole body’s sugar and fats and can directly
affect the levels of cholesterol in the body.
8. Cholesterol:
The plant form of cholesterol is known
as phytosterols that actually recovers your cholesterol levels in the
body by replacing the natural cholesterol in your body. Phytosterols act
correspondingly to soluble fibres like Metamucil as they metabolize the
body by muddling up the existing cholesterol in the meal. Phytosterols
and Metamucil supplements are available in the market and are advised to
be taken with food. Phytosterols spread in the body exactly like
margarine or butter on bread. So it’s better to take these supplements
with nuts, oatmeal etc.
9. Indian Gooseberry:
This is an Indian fruit that has equal
amount of vitamin C than two oranges, and it gives strong power to the
body that can fight with cholesterol problems. It also has heart healthy
antioxidants that promotes better health of cardiovascular system. It
is said by the doctors that bad cholesterol or LDL is rusted in your
blood circulation and converts into plaque that glues-up your arteries.
Vitamin C antioxidants stop the corrosion and hence reduce plaque dumped
in your arteries.
10. Licorice:
Licorice is a root that reduces LDL, and
build-up fat in the body. It can also be taken in pill form. The
doctors’ are conducting further researches to measure how it works but
it is yet known that licorice can react with the medicines like
laxatives, insulin and contraceptives.
11. Bergamot
This is more like a cross between lemon
and an orange. This food just hit the market with all its benefits
especially to lower the cholesterol levels in the body. Essential oils
from this food is used in many perfumes because of intense citrus smell.
Bergamots are rich in flavonoids that clears the plaque from the
arteries and as a result lowers the cholesterol level in the body. It is
also proved that bergamot not only reduces the LDL but it also raises
the level of HDL.
